When it comes to securing your property in Los Angeles, few things are more effective — or more permanent — than a quality iron fence. But not all iron fences are created equal. After 40 years of fabricating and installing iron fences throughout Los Angeles, we’ve seen what works and what doesn’t. Here’s what you need to know before you buy.
Why Iron Is the Best Material for Security Fencing
Iron fencing is the gold standard for security for several reasons:
- Strength — Iron is extremely difficult to cut, bend, or break through. Unlike wood or vinyl, it doesn’t give way under pressure.
- Visibility — Unlike solid walls, iron fences allow you to see what’s happening outside your property. This is actually a security advantage — intruders prefer concealment.
- Durability — A properly fabricated and coated iron fence will last 30–50 years with minimal maintenance.
- Deterrence — The visual presence of a solid iron fence, especially with pointed pickets, is a strong deterrent to would-be intruders.
Types of Iron Fences for Security
1. Spear-Top (Pointed Picket) Fences
The most common security iron fence. The pointed tops make climbing over extremely difficult and painful. Available in many styles — from simple to ornate. Best for: residential front yards, commercial properties.
2. Flat-Top Fences with Horizontal Rails
A cleaner, more modern look. Less intimidating visually but still very strong. Best for: modern homes, HOA communities, commercial properties where aesthetics matter.
3. Anti-Climb Fences
Designed specifically to prevent climbing. Features close-spaced pickets, outward-angled tops, or additional security elements. Best for: high-security commercial properties, schools, warehouses.
How Tall Should a Security Fence Be?
For residential security in Los Angeles, we recommend a minimum height of 5 to 6 feet. For commercial properties or higher-security needs, 7 to 8 feet is common. Keep in mind that Los Angeles has local zoning rules about fence heights — front yard fences are typically limited to 3–4 feet in residential zones, while side and rear fences can go higher.
Custom vs. Pre-Made Fencing
At Iron Custom, we fabricate all our fences in-house. This means we can build exactly what your property needs — the right height, the right spacing, the right style. Pre-made panels from a big-box store might be cheaper upfront, but they rarely fit perfectly, they’re often lower quality steel, and they don’t last as long.
